Never Fear, I've Not Disappeared!!

I've been buried under "have-to's" the last few weeks! Trust me, I'm going to have plenty of time to catch up on my blogging as I only have two more days at my temporary job -- which includes several awards I am oh-so-overdue in thanking the recipients for, a thank you to another blogger for a pair of Lee Slender Secret jeans I won in her giveaway, and pics to show y'all what we've been busy working on around the ole property for the last few weeks! After my last day at work, I'm heading to Ohio on Thursday for a visit with family and friends. I should be back home by Sept. 16th or 17th, and ready to get caught up with my blogging duties.

I'm standing in the pasture to get this photo... you can see I got the foundation cleaned up and primed with Kilz, all ready to paint! A few months ago, hubby mixed up some concrete and filled all the cracks in this foundation, which is newer than the house foundation but was obviously never finished by the previous occupants. Now all I need to do is get house paint on it to match the house. How do you like hubby's solution to get to the top of the house?! Extension ladder propped and tied down in the back of the pick-up truck.

Of course, as I was leaving the pasture, I just had to get
this shot of a wild sunflower! :)

Our Very First Green Pepper!

Ok, enough of the whole comments-and-how-should-one-respond-to-comments forum. No one's doing it the right way, or the wrong way. Everyone's doing the best they can given their life -- work, family, and recreational time which does not include blogging!

Now, on a lighter note. We have a few potted pepper and tomato plants. Here's our first sprouting veggie! Woo-hoo! Next year -- a real garden. This year -- just a few pots.

Pretty exciting stuff for a gal who hasn't gardened since mom & dad made her weed the garden all those years ago, and you know I just loved that.

I know how excited y'all are for me, so I'll keep you in the loop and let you know how our lil green pepper is doing.

The Never-Ending Home Project

BEFORE
The trim color "matches" the metal roof (ehw)

As you can see, LOTS of scraping and sanding to prep for paint
Lil Miss Tori wants to be outside with her dad

AFTER
A nice neutral tan color with darker brown trim

Would you believe it was my 67-year old mom's idea to paint the house? (She's probably regretting that grand idea by now.)

We planned on repainting it this year as it was in bad shape when hubby bought it a few years ago. But it's a big job, and we wanted to plan strategically around the weather. As luck would have it, mom came to visit last Fri, with plans to only stay through Tuesday. But she's still here since it was HER idea to paint our house, lol... the weather's been great. Very dry (no rain), BUT the gnats were atrocious for a few days, and we've both got our share of welts. I'm glad the gnats seem rather sparse today, thank goodness.

I'll tell you what
, we will ALL be glad when this project is done. But it makes our lil country home look SO nice. :-) Now if I can just get some time to plant flowers it will look even better!

More pics to come as we finish up over the next few days. And then I'll get back to my bloggy friends too. Sorry I've been rather remiss in visiting everyone's blog AGAIN. I'll be back soon, I promise!

IS IT MARGARITA TIME YET?!!

And the winner is.....

I don't know...... YET. I hate to keep y'all in suspense, but bear with me for another 24 hours or so while I try to get organized and situated here...

I just got home from Arizona this afternoon, and I'm trying to catch up on a ton of things. I've gone through the mail; don't you just love how much junk mail you get while you are away from home? Sheesh!! Got everything unpacked, doing laundry now, fed the horses and trucked manure out to the back-40, did some house cleaning, cleaned out the frig since tomorrow is trash day, entered all my receipts into my check book (mostly for gasoline), helped Ringo catch a rat that was under a pile of trash.... yeppers, I moved the trash and the rat tried to make a bolt for freedom. Um, no, that didn't work. For a lab, Ringo is incredibly fast. In fact, he beat out both cats and got this rat. A big'un too. He was so proud of himself, and he followed me back to the house with this huge rat trapped in his mouth. YUCK. Sorry everyone, I did NOT get a photo.

Speaking of photos, I still have to download the ones I took on my trip, AND tomorrow I need to take some pics of what hubby did while I was gone. I think everyone will be as surprised as I was upon my return. He had QUITE the exciting weekend..... it's probably a good thing I'm back home. :-)

A big thank-you to everyone who entered my giveaway. I will get the winner drawn tomorrow and let y'all know who it is!

I LOVE My Crappy Job... I Really, Really Do!

You can see the old outhouse and the former chicken coop-turned-cathouse in the background

So, what did you think my title meant?! Maybe you thought I was talking about my 8-5 office job where I was overworked and underpaid and had to deal with an egomaniac controlling freak of a boss everyday.... well, you had the underpaid part right! (And I've had my share of freak bosses in my life!!) But ya know what? I'll take this crappy job anyday over a stress-filled company job!!!

While we are building a loafing shed and larger pen for Stormy, the newest addition to our horse family, she is in a smallish pen which needs cleaned out every day, or at least every other day, or sometimes once a week.... well, you know what I mean. I've discovered it's best to stay on top of this task, or you are literally knee deep in you-know-what. Although I will give credit where credit is due, and the meadow larks do a marvelous job of breaking it all down. They are on it before it even hits the ground sometimes! Ok, maybe a slight exaggeration...

So, I decided to snap a few pictures of this glamorous job and share it with everyone. Since I decided to snap my pics before hubby left for work today, he felt bad and decided to do the nasty chore himself. Hmmm, that strategy worked quite well, maybe I should clean her pen everyday before he leaves for work....

Hey, good action shot here, could have used it for the last Sunday Stills challenge...

As you can see below, Stormy often likes to supervise the effort. She has to be one of the all around best supervisors I've ever had in my life. She knows that I'm here to do a job, and that I'll do it well because it's what I do, so she doesn't interfere and try to tell me a better way to get it done. No, as a matter of fact, sometimes she even obliges by adding to the surplus while I'm there so I can do my job as effectively as possible. She's just happy for the companionship, although she's always angling for a horsey treat, or a scritch behind the ears.

Shoveling the crap into the wheelbarrow, while Stormy supervises

So then, once all the crap is in the wheelbarrow, it needs to be dumped in the back 40 ~ this was especially fun on the really cold wind-chill days this past winter. Sometimes I just didn't make it all the way to the back of the pasture, because I knew if I got that far out, my frozen legs wouldn't get me all the way back up to the house! Once I dump it in several small piles, I usually rake it out, just so it will finish drying out and fertilize the soil quicker.

So I would say this task takes the place of the workouts I would do when I lived in the city -- the bike rides, the weight bench, the aerobics. Don't you think so??!

Well, enough for the computer today, it's 79 already and I'm heading outside to sit in the backyard for a spell, maybe even get a little sun! yippee!!

The back-40 trek

What's New in Kansas?

Well, we've made it through January (finally). I swear it's got to be the most depressing month of the year. I don't know why, it just is. We've been quite lucky and have only been snowed upon maybe twice? And just a dusting at that. Got up to 70 degrees yesterday. BUT IT'S WINDY. You really can't do much of anything outside when the wind is gusting between 20 and 30 mph. No, I'm not kidding. Mind you, I am not complaining, just stating the facts as they are. I know I have much to be thankful for here in Kansas, the largest thankee being that I don't live in Ohio any longer and I haven't had to put up with the most horrible winter they've had in years!

At least the sun is out in full force today (winds gusting 24 to 33 mph). I firmly believe just the presence of the sun everyday makes life infinitely happier. We're at 51 today, still pretty darn good for February 1.

We just watched the funniest Super Bowl commercials; Tom taped it earlier this week. I feel the need to share what I felt was the most hysterical commercial - the Tide talking stain. Copy the link below to your browser - you'll laugh. You need it, it's probably Monday and you're at work... a good time to waste some time. :)

Aside from our wind (I know, Ohio friends and family are quite jealous and would gladly trade their single-digit cold and snow and ice for WIND).... not much a-shakin' lately. I've been pretty busy with my photography and making new products on Zazzle. Here's a few items I rather like...

Update on My Life....

Ok, so I've been most terribly remiss in keeping everyone up-to-date on my blog. Let's see, who or what shall I blame? The beautiful Kansas weather this time of year (up to 60 degrees today Dec. 2), the family that was here off and on throughout last week, the job at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center that lasted just shy of 3 weeks, or the Mobsters game on Myspace???? Hmmmm, take your pick!

I will say that Mobsters can be quite addictive -- I play it for the strategy angle (should I buy more income-producing territory or more equipment for attacking other mobsters?) rather than joining some of the clique mobs that populate the game. And trust me, some of these mobs can become quite antagonistic at times! No, I prefer to play on my own, attacking those who do not belong to big mobs and making $$ off them so I can advance to my next level. I guess that mirrors my place in life -- I always prefer to take the lonesome road, or at least the road less traveled, as I excel by myself!

The job at SCKRMC was not for me. I was getting all the different medical insurance plans down pat, even though it can be extremely difficult and confusing. What finally pushed me over the edge and made me decide this job wasn't for me -- being alone on the 3-11 shift in ER, not only responsible for registration of all ER walk-ins and emergencies alike, but also responsible for answering the switchboard, calling code blues or reds and gathering appropriate staff as needed for these code calls, handling the fire alarm if it went off and following all protocols and processes involved thereto, etc., etc. The hospital's business is increasing rapidly, plus they just received approval to build a new hospital on the edge of town, which will cause their business to increase even more. I had a discussion with the Business Office Manager upon my departure, and she agreed with me on many counts that there should be 2 people staffing the ER registration desk, not just one. Just think how these patients must feel as the registrar stops to answer the switchboard multiple times as she is trying to get the patient registered!!

WalMart called and I just couldn't go through with that one!! They wanted to hire me as a cashier for the holiday season -- sure, it would have been some income, and perhaps I would have been retained after the holidays and even managed to move up in the ranks due to my most excellent abilities and experience (LOL), but I decided I just could NOT deal with the holiday mobs. Nope, not for me. I served my time in the retail world in my 20s!!!

And so I search for the next job. I just applied for an Accts Payable clerk with Sumner County. This job pays relatively well, and obviously would have great benefits as it is a gov't job. I decided a few years ago I really like working with numbers, so I think I might like this job. The only drawback -- full time 8-5, so I wouldn't see Tom much during the week, just on weekends. I just can't worry about that right now, maybe I could transfer into another position within the county later down the line. I'll cross my fingers and hope I hear from them.

We are less one horse as of yesterday. No, we haven't put paint horse down (yet). Tom's daughter Missy took Mike (Tom's former roping horse) back to Wyoming with them. Mike's roping days are over due to his age, so he will be pampered and get tons of attention from Missy and Jason and the kids.

The vet came by on Saturday to look at paint horse. He's been limping much worse the last 3 to 4 weeks. The vet thinks that he may actually have some hoof trying to grow under the old hoof growth. So Tom trimmed his front hooves and he seems to be walking a bit better, altho still limping. He lays down out in the pasture more during the day. I'm still going to try to get him into that sanctuary in eastern Kansas. He may still have the potential to be used as a training horse for kids; time will tell.

Tom was in WA state at the Boeing plant for the two weeks prior to Thanksgiving. There were some defective nut plates that had to be replaced; seems they didn't get anti-corrosive material applied to them before installation. So Tom got to work 12 hr shifts while he was in WA, and bulked up his paycheck for 2 weeks, for which he was very thankful. He was off all last week, and just returned to work at Spirit today, but he is still on the 3-day work weeks due to the recent Boeing strike. I hope he finds out some good news today when he returns to work -- such as they are going back to regular work shifts, or they may even want him to go to WA state again. I guess there are still some Spirit guys up there this week.

I think that's about all since October. I must say I love living out here and have never felt isolated or lonesome. It is so rugged and beautiful, and quiet. I do miss everyone back home in Ohio and I'm hoping I can drive home for a visit very soon. I'm trying to work something out, so we'll see.... I know it would be easier for me to do before I get a job!

Oh, re: pics........ I'm crossing my fingers that I can get a new camera real soon. My old camera just doesn't have the focus that I want or need. So IF I get that new camera, I promise there will be new pics coming. I didn't even get any pics with Tom's family here last week. :-(

Everyone Waves Hello in Kansas!

One of the things I absolutely love about living in small town America.... everyone is so friendly. When you occasionally pass another car or truck on our gravel road, the other person always has a wave or tip of the hat as they zoom by. Even the farmers in their tractors have a friendly wave. This neighborly farmer waved as I went by, and again as I was taking pictures.

The Ongoing Kitchen Renovation Saga

after ~ new kitchen faucet

before ~ old kitchen faucet

There will be more kitchen renovation pics to come. For those who don't know, we tore out the walls and ceiling completely, and Tom has put up new drywall. We still need to finish the drywall, then prime and paint the walls and ceiling, and plaster the ceiling. We'll be getting those items finished up this weekend, since he has 5 days off.

After that, a new western style ceiling fan, new countertop and hopefully a new tile backsplash (with mom's help!), and new laminate flooring. When mom comes back in early November, we're going to repaint all the cabinets and put on the new brushed nickel handles that Tom bought on Ebay.

In the meantime, it's ongoing, and it's messy! I'll be so glad when it's all done.

A Splash of the Caribbean in Kansas

How's this for a hot shot of color in Kansas?! The table had been abandoned and left by the previous owners. It was in pretty bad shape, so we (mom & I) decided that bright, bright colors was the way to go. The chairs were Tom's and had been repainted green several years ago (see last photo in July post); however, I thought what better color to go with red than aqua! I can't help myself, I love my bright, sunny colors. Mom painted all the outdoor furniture and didn't she do an awesome job?!

On the back porch, we infused the aqua into the new and neutral color scheme. A closet door now screams "look at me!" when you walk into the house. A small western styled hook on the aqua door reminds visitors they're in the American west, not a cottage in the caribbean. A small and rustic 3-hook wall rack from the Pottery Barn provided a spot to hang the dog collars and leads. Tom's much-treasured clock from an aunt hangs above the 3-hook rack.

The Life of a Non-Working Girl

Ok, first off, that title is not totally accurate. Even though I am not working a full-time job, I can't believe how busy I am staying. I end up with more on my "list" than I can get done in a day! So I may not be working at a professional job and getting paid, but I sure am working at the homestead here in Kansas.

Today, I got my hair cut. Yep. I think we took 3 or 4 inches off. It was getting pretty mangly at the ends and I just could not stand it any longer. I like it, I think. I'll give it a few days and see how it works out when I wash and dry it. Could be a whole different look then. I'll try to get a pic in the next few days and send to a select few. :)

Stopped at the grocery store before I headed out of town to get some fixings for a pasta salad; just finished putting it all together, and first taste was pretty good. We'll see how it tastes after the flavors blend together for a few hours.

Tom & I also took paint horse to the vet this a.m. for a follow-up. He tangled with some barb wire fencing last weekend, and it was very, very ugly. He tore off a section of his foot above one of his front hoofs (hooves?). We were up until midnight last Sat, between Tom getting him to the vet and then rigging up a small pen to keep him in from this point forward. Of course it was raining too. Took Tom almost an hour just to get the fifth wheel loose (rusted) and the trailer hooked up. He hadn't used it since last fall. He learned his lesson from that lil episode. :-( While he was doing that, I was holding paint. Amazing how high a horse's pain tolerance can be. He walked around with blood pooled at the bottom of the ripped portion, and he was quite content to eat the "good" grass. In any event, when the vet took off the bandage today, he just shook his head and said (again), "not good". So it's a day by day thing now. Tom has given paint a shot of penicillin every day for the last 5 days, and redressed his wound and rebandaged it every day too. Now we'll just be redressing it and rebandaging it everyday. I was blown away at Tom's patience, his calmness and his knowledge. He's awesome with horses. :)

This pic of paint a few days ago belies just how serious his injury is; you can just barely see the lovely aqua bandage on his front leg. His sedate temperament has really shown through these last few days and he's been awesome through everything. His problem is that he's only 7 years young, and he gets bored easily. He had a bad habit of hanging his head over the fence to get the grass on the other side, even though he has 15-20 acres to graze. He must have got his foot caught in the lower string of barb wire; we weren't home when it happened. We just came home to a disaster after a lovely day running errands on Saturday and eating at a mexican restaurant.

On Kansas Wheat Fires, Storms and Fluffy Clouds

One of the more amazing phenomena here would be the wheat field fires. It seems I moved here as the farmers were harvesting their wheat fields. Well, the next step in the farming process, before they plant anything else in the wheat fields, is to burn them off. According to Tom, this eradicates any diseases or pests that could be in the soil, so as not to affect the next crops. The fires are quite an amazing sight, especially at night time! I've included a few pics here but it doesn't come close to capturing the sight as you stand outside the house and watch them when they are just a mile or two away!!

Then there are the storms. As they appear to the west and south of us, I love to take pics of them. Surprisingly, I am less afraid of storms out here than I was in Ohio. I think being able to see them form, and see the direction they are tracking, makes a big difference. It is awe-inspiring to be outside taking pics of a storm as it passes around you. Maybe I'll feel differently the first time it comes right at me!! :-0

Finally, there are the big white fluffy cloud days. I love these days the best. I think the sky is incredibly beautiful when it is big and blue, and full of white fluffy clouds!

Daily Life in Oz Land

Ok, I am sooo not used to these temps! We have a heat advisory today, which basically advises everyone to stay in air conditioning, if you can. Heat index may get as high as 107 today, plus the humidity is very high, so a very bad combination. At 1:53 p.m., it's currently 96 degrees.

Daily life consists of early rise between 6:30 and 8 a.m. to get the girls outside and then feed all the critters, excluding the horses who are happy with their grass this time of year. Put some coffee on, check my email and maybe do a little reading. I'm currently reading The Simple Living Guide by Janet Luhrs. Great book if you're interested in streamlining and getting back to basics. I made some "from scratch" macaroni & cheese yesterday morning. This morning I made pancakes from Bisquick, but quite tasty with a little vanilla added to the batter.

I'm having just a little difficulty adjusting to my schedule, which consists of getting up around 1 a.m. to fix/finish Tom's dinner. Then I'm awake until 3, sometimes 4 a.m., watching TV with him. Usually he falls asleep before me. Last night he started watching "The Kingdom" with Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner -- not usually my pick as far as movies go. But I got involved in watching it while he fell asleep. A bit graphic for my taste, but a very simple and profound ending. I seem to run out of steam every 3rd or 4th day, and I can only attribute this to my weird sleeping/waking schedule. So yesterday I ended up napping for about an hour. :) I've never been much for naps, so that's a very new concept for me.

Tomorrow we are heading north to Abilene, KS to visit his relatives and attend a rodeo; it's about a 2 hour and 45 min drive. Tom was born and raised in Abilene and although both his parents have passed way, he still has family up there. They are throwing us a little party, then we'll head to the rodeo for the evening so Tom can watch some of the team roping events. Hopefully I won't pass out in the forecasted 104 heat!! How embarrassing that would be! :-0

I've included some new pics -- some are for fun, and some are me playing around with my camera and trying to get better at taking pics. Blogger.com isn't very user-friendly when it comes to arranging your pics in your blog, it's quite tedious. So if it looks a bit mussy, oh well, what can I say. I did my best. ;-)

Tornado Finally Blows Me to Kansas!

Temp is 101 at 6:44 p.m. with severe storms just a few miles to the north of me... no rain here yet. And yes, you begin to drip sweat the minute you walk out the back door. Wouldn't it be nice if that meant you automatically lost weight???

Ok, it wasn't a tornado, but it was quite a whirlwind from selling my house to moving out, less than 3 weeks to be exact! We moved my furniture here the July 4th weekend and I'm still sorting thru boxes almost 3 weeks later. There's just nowhere to put everything. I'm so glad I ditched tons of my stuff before I moved, else there would be even more boxes.

My former boss stiffed me on my last paycheck. Gee what a surprise! I will just say that leaving that job and moving forward with my life is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my ENTIRE life. Honestly, I swear it is. That job was corrosive to my very soul. I am so much happier in this rugged and wild corner of Kansas.

There are new wonders to see every day. Incredibly large and unique bugs, baby barn swallows in nests, the horses and their antics, stunning sunsets and stormy skies, a frog symphony by the pond each evening... the list goes on and on.

The baby barn swallows in the nest on the front porch are quite adorable, although one looks like he has quite the attitude. I'll be keeping an eye on them, and trying to get a few more photos. It's a risky endeavor, as the barn swallow community likes to swoop and dive at me as I photograph their babies; many of my photos turn out fuzzy. I take about 15 just to get one good one!

In addition to the resident barn swallows, a certain box turtle seems to enjoy the same turf. I managed to get a pic of him the other day, but boy oh boy is he a fast mover! And I thought turtles were slow! This little guy is actually pretty big. I would estimate 6 to 8 inches across.

There are other more disgusting facets to country life -- squashed frogs in the driveway, rats and/or mice with their heads chewed off, spiders that are way too big to be in the house, etc. At least the cats are doing their job and killing the rats and mice before they get in the house along with spiders!!

Local folk range from downright weird to small-town friendly. I will say that most folk are very, very friendly -- this is one of the main things I love about small towns. I drove to Caldwell today, a historic cowtown about 17 miles west of us. Pretty much everything was "downtown" on Main Street. I stopped at Karl's Apple Market for a few groceries and dropped off an Ebay package at the local post office across the street. The postal employee wasn't sure what to make of my package with its prepaid Paypal label. I think that might have been a tad too much technology for him to grasp. Then I headed over to the Liquor Locker to get Tom some "hi-power" beer. According to Tom, the grocery stores only stock 3.2 beer. You have to go to liquor stores to get the good stuff.

Not too much traffic goes down our dirt road (ok, it does have gravel on it). In fact, when someone DOES go down our road, it's almost cause for suspicion. There are no other homes beyond our house. There is some property that will be auctioned off this weekend, so that has increased the "traffic" by 3 or 4 vehicles daily the last few days. Two local men stopped by a few days ago; they were hay baling to the fields south of us and one of the tractors overheated (gee, I wonder why?), so they got a few bucketfuls of water from me. It can be just a smidgeon frightening to have two strange men pull in your drive when you live in the stix. But they were very friendly, and very talkative. Shoot, I was ready to offer them a beer and a sit-down. :)

Oh yeah... and I'm hanging clothes outside these days too. Trying to get back to basics, and save a few dollars by not using the dryer so much. :)
