The Not-So-Purty Side of Nature

We rarely see cardinals in our neck of the woods. But in the last few weeks, hubby and I had noticed a strikingly beautiful cardinal hanging out around our house and near our tree break.

I found this today.

And this.

 Fluff.  Suspect Number One.

 Barack. Suspect Number Two.

I've told him repeatedly, NO BIRDS, only rats and mice.  But he is full of cat-titude and has refused to abide by my rules.  We are sad that our cardinal is gone and quite possibly endured a heinous kitteh-style death.

Ringo sez he didn't see anything while we were gone this afternoon.

Hmmmmm ...

looks like he just woke up to me.

  1. I HATE to step out my back door while barefoot and step on some "critter" my cat has murdered and brought home for me. Ugh! Poor beautiful cardinal.

  2. Yes - here it is moles and mice and every once in awhile a bird.... (usually just barn swallows tho)

  3. Cute! :) I crack up everytime I read something in "animal speak." Sorry about the cardinal. They are beautiful birds. But cats will be cats, I guess!

  4. So darn cute (except for the bird)!! I hate it when our cat Morgan kills the birds! We love to fill the bird feeders and watch them, but Morgan is always lurking around waiting for the "kill".

  5. Oh no! We have a few cardinals here that visit our back yard. That is sad to see what is left of a beautiful bird, but that is nature and we aren't in charge of things. Hope your Easter was great.

  6. Cats are evil LOL. The photo of your dog is oh so adorable!

Hope you having a fabulous Easter dear Susan!

    Hope your Easter was great!

  8. I had to take the bird feeders out of my back yard because I kept finding dead birds, and thought it was our resident hawk that was killing them. Turns out it was my 50# terrier, Charity! She'd lay in wait like a cat, then pounce and actually catch them!

Too sad about the cardinal, but cats will be cats. My three used to catch the spring bunnies and play 'cat and mouse' with them, and you know how they can scream! I'd run out of the house screaming myself, trying to rescue the poor things, but they were usually too badly damaged by then.

  9. Too bad about the cardinal. We have a group singing here every morning.

    The dog shot is wonderful.

  11. That's too bad about the Cardinal...especially since you don't have too many around to enjoy. We have lots on our farm but it is our little Shih Tzu Chelsea who is the 'killer' around here but now that our 'city' cats are starting to adventure out of the barn we may start loosing some of our local visitors too. Oh well...what can you do as cat's will be cats and we love them too. Hope you have a wonderful day! Maura

  13. Our kitties bring home Moles. Eeeeeck! They are so wierd looking when they are alive, but dead? Even creepier!

I think you need to have a trial and find the true Killer!

    Happy Sunshine, Susan! misha

  15. It's so sad for the cardinal. And for you to find him.

We had a set of Steller's jays and I walked out one day to find a big pile of blue feathers. I don't believe it was a cat, but a hawk that got him.

The only consolation is that every animal has its purpose, and although each is a part of the food chain, life goes on for each species.

Okay, I know that's not very consoling, but it's the best you can do when a beautiful bird dies.

  16. Aw, that poor little birdie :(
But like you said, that's the circle of life.
Those cats have the 'I'm-not-gonna-talk' looks on both of their faces. Lol
I wonder if they threatened the dog into silence....Something to look into!
Maybe it's time to put Ringo into doggy witness protection >.<

  19. Oh,NO! I miss you and hope to not stay away so long between visits. Don't you just hate it when life gets in the way of your blogging?

  20. I feed the birds year round here on the Ponderosa and Mambo thinks I've gone and laid out a smorgasbord of vast entrees just for his dining pleasure. Go figure......

    I hate it when I find the feathers or a head...{{{SIGH}}}

God bless ya and have a beautiful day!!!

  21. Oh darn... cardinals are so pretty, but there's no stopping animals from doing what nature intended them to do.

  22. Great to hear from you! Thanks. This is a darling post tho sad for the bird. We have cardinals and goldfinches and eastern king birds and red=headed sparrows that sing so prettily. No cats in our neighborhood. People here mostly keep them inside, declawed, fat and lazy.

  23. Suz, I have several pairs of Cardinals . . . You can have one of mine if you promise to muzzle and mitten the kitties.

  24. Whoah, I would have lost it with that find - I love cardinals.... I know it's part of life and the rational part of me says "oh well" but my heart says "oh no!!!!"

  25. How awful, but your post is really cute :) Unfortunately, since our famous Barn Kittehs arrived last year, we've seen several feather piles. Yes, Cardinals have been "keeled" too. We have a lot of Cards, but I really hate to lose even one :( And titmice. And goodness knows what else. All creatures are fed pretty well around this farm. I feed the birds. I feed the cats. In return, the cats eat my birds :( Perhaps a bell collar would help, but then I always worry the cats might get hung up on a fence. (sigh) What to do? -Tammy

  27. Aw dang. We have two cats who will "catitude" anything they can catch. Including birds, and they've caught a number of them.

  29. Don't you hate stumbling upon pet induced carnage? Never fun!

  30. Oh, so sad. His mate is probably nearby. Hopefully she will find another. My cat brings me a bird every now and then. We have a parakeet, also. Flies around and she knows she will not live to see tomorrow if she messes with him. He likes her. Funny how that works.

Hope all is well in Oz Land.

  31. Cats definitely love their birds...we had two and they would bring them in the house...feathers everywhere. Found you through the Far Side of Fifty blog. Love your entries! Maria
